There are three pieces of equipment necessary for every catcher that is included in a catcher’s set. The headgear (or facemask), a chest protector and leg guards. Every catcher will need these three pieces of equipment to be properly outfitted for the position. These three pieces of equipment, along with a catcher’s mitt are necessary to make sure a catcher is equipped for performance and safety. Instructions for determining proper sizing for each piece of equipment is listed below. Finally, specifications and descriptions are listed for several of the best catcher’s sets for players of all ages listed by age group.
Choosing the proper catcher’s set:
Each catcher’s set includes: The headgear (or mask), the chest protector and the leg guards. Each piece as specific sizing options. Listed below you will see how to measure for each of these three pieces of equipment to make sure that the set you buy includes proper sizing for each piece of equipment.
Write down the size for mask, chest protector and leg guards. With this information, review the sets listed below. Each of the sets has the size parameters for piece of equipment listed below the brand and model name. Make sure that the set includes all three pieces that you need. All the sets are different so, there should be a set that accommodates the needs of nearly everyone.
Catcher’s set age groupings:
- Beginner: Ages 5-8
- Youth: age 9-12
- Intermediate: age 12-15
- Adult: age 15+
- These groupings are guidelines only. Make sure each piece of equipment is sized appropriately for your player.
Scroll to the age group that your player is in and confirm that all three pieces of equipment fits the sizes you have written down.
How to Determine Chest Protector Size:
The Chest protector size is determined by measuring from the bottom of the neck (even with the collar bone) to the bottom of the torso (just below the belt) This measurement, in inches, is the chest protector size
How to Determine Catcher’s Headgear Size:
The size for the catcher’s headgear is determined exactly the same as helmet size. Simply measure all the way around your players’ head. This measurement is the circumference of the head.
With a soft tape measure, start at the forehead, just above the eyebrows. Measure all the way around the back of the head, and then back to the forehead. Make sure the tape is straight and sitting just above the ears. If you do not have a tape measure, use a string in the same manner and then measure the string. Use the chart at the right to convert the head circumference into hat size. The headgear is determined by the players hat size.
How to Determine Leg Guard Size:
The leg guard size is determined by measuring from the middle of the knee cap, to the top of the foot (at the bottom of the ankle) This measurement, in inches, is the leg guard size.
