The job of a catcher is one of the most demanding on a baseball team. As a catcher grows in to the position, he will call the pitches, catch each thrown pitch, keep track of base runners, attempt to throw out runners attempting to steal, back up plays at first or third base, cover the plate when throws come in from the field, field fair balls hit directly in front of the plate and chase down foul balls hit near the plate area. Catchers need specialized equipment to be effective and safe behind the plate. Having a proper catcher’s mitt is a must for any player who plays catcher position with any regularity. A catcher’s glove is referred to as a “mitt” because it does not have separate finger pockets as regular baseball gloves do. Catchers mitts tend to be very stiff and take considerable time to break in, which we will cover in detail.

How to measure a catcher’s mitt:

Catcher’s mitts are measured by circumference. The circumference of a catcher’s glove can be anywhere between 29.5 and 34.5 inches. To determine the circumference, measure around the perimeter with a flexible measuring tape. This measurement is the mitt’s circumference, or size.

How to choose the correct size catcher’s mitt:

Typically, anyone ages 7-12 will require a mitt of 32″ or less, while a player who is 13 or older will usually go for a mitt of 32.5″ or more.

Construction materials:

Younger, less experienced players, will likely want a softer material which makes breaking in much easier and quicker which will make it easier to open and close the glove. For these players, a synthetic or pigskin material would be best. These gloves are less expensive, so when a player quickly outgrows the mitt, your investment will have been less.

Players who have already committed to several years in the position, will want a stiffer, more durable material. These players should choose steerhide or full-grain leather mitts.

Breaking in a mitt:

The best way to break in a new glove is by using it. To break in a catcher’s mitt prior to putting it in play, it should be used for practice, warm up or just playing catch. Alternatively, it could be used catching balls thrown by a pitching machine. Another effective way to break in a catcher’s mitt is by using a glove mallet. One of the most functional and economic models is the Rawlings Glove Mallet Using a mallet for a few minutes each day to simulate repeatedly catching a ball which will soften the leather and help form the pocket.

Glove conditioner and an over sized ball and strap used repeatedly when the glove is not in use will form the pocket and soften the leather. Maintaining the mitt:

To keep your glove clean and prevent the leather from drying out, a glove conditioner should be used 4 times a season. Glove conditioners do not soften the leather. Catching a baseball (or using a mallet) softens the leather. A conditioner is used to maintain the glove for years of use. There are many glove conditioners on the market. One of the best I have found is Rawlings Gold Glove Butter which was designed for higher-end gloves but works well on any glove – old or new.

Making sure the glove is properly broken in prior to use will enhance the functionality and give the player greater confidence.
