Knowing how to choose the proper bat for the 9-10 year old age group can be challenging. Not only are there many brands of bats to choose from but you must also consider length, weight and diameter.
There are four key factors to consider when making your baseball bat selection:
1) Bat Weight
As a general rule, bigger, stronger players usually prefer a heavier bat for maximum power. Smaller players usually benefit from a lighter bat that allows greater bat speed. To determine the weight that’s right for you, swing a variety of bats and find the weight that is comfortable for you. High school and college players will be required to swing a BBCOR bat, which will always be a -3 model. Younger players will want something more controllable like the common -10 sized bat.

2) Bat Length
Length and weight combine for peak performance. A longer bat gives you greater reach, allowing you to hit balls on the other side of the plate. But remember that a longer bat may be heavier, and the extra weight could slow you down. Like checking the weight, you need to swing bats of different lengths to decide what length best suits you.

3) League Requirements (Bat Standards/Certification)
There are three bat certifications that may come into play when choosing the proper bat for your player. We examine the differences in bat certifications for:

- High school/ collegiate leagues.

4) Bat Feel
Feel may be the most important factor. The bat should feel right to you, like an extension of your arm and hand. After all, you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time together.

Most players in the 9-10 year old age group will do well with a 28-29 inch bat with a -10 or -11 drop. Smaller players will want a shorter (26 or 27 inch), lighter (16 or 17 ounce) bat. A bigger player will want a longer (30 inch) heavier (21 or 22 ounce) bat. The baseball bat sizing chart will help guide you in making the proper bat choice. Height and weight differences among players in this age group can vary significantly.
Depending on their skill level, most 9-10 year old players will play either on a Little League minor league division player-pitch team or a major league division team. The Little League division chart by age is at the bottom of this page. Check with your league if you have any questions about which league or division your child should play in.
